Moderna-Merck Melanoma Treatment Shows Promising Results in Late-Stage Trial
Moderna and Merck have reported positive interim results from their late-stage trial of a personalized mRNA cancer therapy for melanoma. The combination treatment, which pairs Moderna's therapy with Merck's blockbuster treatment Keytruda, showed statistically significant improvement over Keytruda alone in reducing the risk of melanoma recurrence and spread.
The shares of Moderna soared nearly 90% following the announcement, while Merck gained around 10%. Analysts and experts are cautiously optimistic about the results, but are waiting for the full trial data to be released before making any final judgments.
Dr. Ryan Sullivan, Director of Cutaneous Medical Oncology at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, stated that the positive study 'may change the way we treat cancer more broadly.' However, Lale Akoner, Global Market Strategist for eToro, emphasized that investors should keep expectations measured and wait for detailed clinical results, regulatory progress, and evidence that the technology works across other cancers.
The partners are planning to bring the vaccine to market in 2027, with peak sales potential in melanoma alone potentially reaching multiple billions. However, Andrew Tsai, Analyst at Jefferies, notes that investors should be cautious about the companies' ability to manufacture personalized vaccines at scale and the challenges associated with it.
