Moderna's Cancer Vaccine Nears Commercialization Despite Real-World Hurdles
Moderna's cancer vaccine is nearing commercialization after posting positive Phase 3 results in melanoma, but clinical practitioners are flagging real-world challenges such as cost, infrastructure, and time.
Dr. Dae Ho Lee, a professor of medical oncology at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, participated in the lung cancer clinical trial of 'Intismeran Autogene', the personalized mRNA cancer vaccine co-developed by Moderna and Merck.
The vaccine works by comparing a patient's tumor tissue with normal tissue to identify neoantigens that appear only on cancer cells, then designs a treatment exclusively for that patient. Dr. Lee likened this process to 'off-the-rack clothing versus a bespoke suit.'
However, the mountain ahead is formidable, as custom manufacturing requires the entire pipeline for each patient: tumor analysis, antigen selection, mRNA design, manufacturing, and transport. This process currently takes roughly three to six weeks, a substantial wait for stage 4 patients who need treatment urgently.
