Montgomery County's Pharmaceutical Cluster Booms with Breakthrough Treatments

Montgomery County in Pennsylvania is home to a cluster of pharmaceutical and biotech companies that employ thousands of scientists, technicians, and researchers.

The area has become one of the most concentrated pharmaceutical and biotech corridors in the country, built on decades of legacy research campuses.

Merck's West Point campus alone employs about 14,000 people, while GSK's Upper Providence hub houses 3,400 researchers, roughly 40% of the company's global R&D workforce.

Johnson & Johnson's Spring House campus is its largest research site anywhere, employing about 2,500 scientists.

The companies behind these breakthrough treatments include Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, which developed Rezdiffra, the first FDA-approved treatment for MASH, a serious fatty liver disease; INOVIO and Harmony Biosciences, which are chasing rare diseases; CSL Behring, which has two standout approvals for gene therapy and hereditary angioedema; and Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and GSK, which have developed vaccines.

The combination of research institutions in the area provides a steady pipeline of scientific talent, contributing to the growth of the pharmaceutical cluster.
