Morgan Stanley Stands by 'Overweight' Rating for Microsoft Amid Reporting Structure Changes

Morgan Stanley has reaffirmed its 'Overweight' rating for Microsoft (MSFT.US) after the company announced changes to its external reporting structure. The move aims to align with the increasingly integrated internal management approach for Cloud + AI, which now operates together.

The three historical operating segments, Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing, are being merged into two new segments: 'Agents and Infra' and 'Devices and Consumer'. Morgan Stanley believes this adjustment is primarily an accounting reclassification and does not alter the underlying economics.

Changes to the Azure and Microsoft 365 metrics are mechanical; the bank maintains its view that Azure growth will accelerate in 1H27 relative to 2H26, and that Microsoft 365 Commercial Cloud growth will accelerate in FY27. The company's updated F1Q27 Azure outlook is also modestly lower under the new definition.

The removal of GitHub Cloud and other developer services from Azure mechanically reduces the historical Azure growth rate for F4Q26 by approximately 1 percentage point. However, this change does not indicate a shift in Azure's underlying momentum.
