Musk Unveils Ambitious Plan to Double Colossus 2 Chip Inventory

Musk's team at xAI is accelerating its efforts to build up the Colossus 2 cluster, which currently runs on 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300 chips. In a recent post on X, Musk outlined his vision for more than doubling the current chip inventory by the end of the year. He stated that an additional 220,000 GB300s are slated to be installed next week, followed by another 220,000 in November.

The SpaceX division has set a goal to equip its Memphis facility with 1 million graphics processing units (GPUs) by 2026, which puts the current chip additions into perspective. Musk's plan could lead to increased attention on AI infrastructure demand and related companies that provide power, networking, and data center gear.

The timeline for Colossus 2's expansion is ambitious, with a possible final boost of 220,000 GB300s in late December 'if we get lucky.'
