NAFDAC Clarifies Viral List of Allegedly Fake Products
A viral list claiming that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has declared numerous products fake has sparked concern in Nigeria. The list includes well-known brands like Cowbell, Peak Milk, Coca-Cola, and various food and medicine items. However, NAFDAC clarified that the list is not a new, consolidated alert but rather a compilation of past regulatory actions taken over several years.
The products mentioned were subject to different types of actions, including recalls, safety alerts, and enforcement against counterfeit or unregistered items. For instance, NAFDAC warned about counterfeit Cowbell sachets imitating Promasidor Nigeria Ltd.'s packaging, not the genuine product itself. Similarly, the agency found counterfeit versions of popular drinks and food items being produced under unhygienic conditions.
NAFDAC also highlighted specific issues, such as falsified batches of the emergency contraceptive Postinor-2, identified by packaging irregularities. The agency emphasized that consumers should verify product details, including registration and batch information, before assuming a product is fake based on the viral list.
In summary, the viral list does not represent a single new alert but rather a combination of past actions. NAFDAC advised consumers to check specific product details to avoid misinterpretations.
