NASA and IBM have collaborated to develop an open-source AI model that will aid researchers in studying the Moon's surface. The Lunar Foundation application is a publicly available tool designed for detailed analysis of lunar data.

The platform was trained on over 30 layers of data collected by nine instruments during four NASA space missions, including those conducted by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The system can help experts identify potential ice deposits in permanently shadowed regions of the Moon and create crater maps to determine safe landing sites.

According to NASA and IBM representatives, the system demonstrated a 23% greater accuracy in identifying key terrain features compared to common methods.
