New Jersey Slaps DataOne Data Center with Record Fine Over Unpermitted Generators

The DataOne data center in Vineland, New Jersey has been slapped with a record fine of $1.07 million for operating unpermitted portable generators on its construction site.

According to inspectors, there were no generators present when they first visited the site in December last year, but 62 units were spotted powering the facility in late July.

The issue has been a contentious one for residents of Vineland, who have complained about the development since its announcement. In February, some residents expressed their concerns at a town hall meeting, claiming that they had seen 'some type of unit' on the site via satellite imagery.

In addition to the fine, the data center has been given a 45-day shutdown deadline. The facility is tied to Microsoft's $33 billion deal with Nebius, which contracted DataOne to supply compute services.
