NIKE Balances Cost Cuts with Growth Investments for Long-Term Success
NIKE, Inc. (NKE) is balancing cost-cutting measures with growth investments to strengthen its market position. The company's Pace program aims to generate $2.5 billion in cumulative savings by fiscal 2031 through organizational streamlining, supply chain modernization, and improved productivity. However, the initiative will incur about $1 billion in pre-tax charges, along with $300 million in severance costs in fiscal 2026.
Despite cost controls, NIKE is prioritizing growth-oriented investments. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, selling and administrative expenses fell 3% year over year, while demand-creation spending rose 5%. This targeted approach allows NIKE to redirect resources toward major sporting events and consumer engagement.
The company faces a challenging tradeoff, with fiscal 2027 revenues expected to decline in high single digits. NIKE is making portfolio adjustments across NIKE Sportswear, the Jordan Brand, and Greater China to bolster long-term health. Additionally, the company plans to reduce excess supply to support stronger full-price sales.
Analysts note that successful execution will be crucial. NIKE must reduce structural costs without compromising innovation and marketing capabilities to ensure sustainable long-term growth. Shares of NIKE have dropped 21.6% in the past six months, compared to the industry's 16.9% decline. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 20.09X, above the industry average of 17.31X. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028 earnings suggests year-over-year growth of 1.3% and 32.6%, respectively, though estimates have recently declined.
