Non-Security Firms Lead Cybersecurity Acquisition Wave

In a surprising shift, the most aggressive buyers in cybersecurity are no longer traditional security firms but rather a search giant, a workflow platform, a payment network, and a consultancy. These companies are acquiring cybersecurity assets not to sell security products but to bolster their core businesses.

Leading the charge is Alphabet, which completed its $32 billion acquisition of Wiz, a cloud security company, on March 11, 2026. Wiz joins other security assets like Mandiant and Chronicle/SecOps under Alphabet's umbrella. Google Cloud's growth, up 82% year over year to $24.77 billion in Q2 FY26, is partly driven by strong demand for its security solutions. Alphabet's stock trades at $343.50, up 9.0% year to date, but there are concerns that customers on rival cloud platforms may hesitate due to Google's ownership of Wiz.

ServiceNow, a workflow software vendor, completed its purchases of Veza on March 2, 2026, and Armis on April 20, 2026, for a total of $8 billion. ServiceNow's CEO, Bill McDermott, highlighted that Armis tracks 7 billion devices in real time, while Veza maps identities. These acquisitions allow ServiceNow to own the workflow from detection to remediation. ServiceNow's stock trades at $134.38, down 8.9% year to date, with a trailing P/E of 84.

Visa agreed to buy BioCatch for $2.4 billion on August 3, 2026, to enhance its fraud defense capabilities. BioCatch's behavioral biometrics help spot fraud by analyzing user behavior. Visa's CEO, Ryan McInerney, noted that risk and security services are growing north of 20%. Visa's stock trades at $360.66, down 2.2% over the past month.

Accenture, a consultancy, agreed to buy a majority stake in Dragos plus all of runZero and NetRise in fiscal Q3 2026, with a combined transaction enterprise value near $4.18 billion. These acquisitions focus on securing operational technology (OT), such as industrial control systems. Accenture's stock rose 11.1% in the month ending October 5, 2026, but is down 23.5% year to date.
