North Penn Creates Fund for Disputed Merck Tax Payments
The North Penn School District has created a fund to separate disputed tax payments from its regular revenue. The move comes after Merck, one of the district's largest taxpayers, filed an appeal on the values of two parcels that generate over $16 million annually in tax revenue.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Bauer explained that Merck is paying its taxes 'under protest' because the dispute has not been resolved. As a result, 25 percent of their taxes are being escrowed until the matter is settled.
The district's finance staff have set aside $3.4 million as an allowance for tax assessment settlements in the anticipated expenses for the 2026-27 budget year. The total balance of the escrow account will increase over the next several months due to revenue collected from real estate taxes.
