North Sumatra Sanitation Facilities to Create Jobs and Improve Community Living

Indonesia's Public Works Ministry is building 375 sanitation facilities in North Sumatra as part of its community-based infrastructure program, which aims to directly benefit local communities through basic facilities and employment. Minister Dody Hanggodo emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it is a priority because of its direct impact on communities.

The 2026 Community-Based Infrastructure Sanitation Program, known as IBM Sanitation, covers several districts and cities in North Sumatra, including Deli Serdang District, Serdang Bedagai District, Medan City, Tebing Tinggi City, Simalungun District, and Padang Lawas District. The program includes the construction of Community-Based Sanitation (Sanimas) facilities and Sanitation for Religious Educational Institutions (LPK) facilities.

The Sanimas facilities include bathroom stalls, grease traps, septic tanks, and infiltration wells, while LPK sanitation facilities include bathroom and toilet stalls, hand-washing stations, ablution areas, clothes-washing facilities, and wastewater treatment structures. The construction of these facilities is expected to create jobs for local residents through labor-intensive construction.
