Australia's Firmus has sealed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI to supply computing capacity from two Malaysian data centres. This deal positions OpenAI as an anchor customer for advanced AI models, which are increasingly demanding infrastructure to run efficiently.

The partnership comes ahead of Firmus' rumoured initial public offering this year, potentially one of Australia's largest in recent years. The company was valued at above $10.5 billion in its last fundraising round, backed by prominent investors including Nvidia, Jane Street, and Blackstone funds.

Firmus has a portfolio of operational data centres across Asia-Pacific, with five more under development. This deal highlights the growing competition among AI groups to secure power and data centre capacity for advanced models. OpenAI recently unveiled its most capable model yet, Astra.
