Nvidia Buys Hugging Face in $13 Billion AI Model Play
Nvidia is expanding its influence in the booming market for open-source AI models by acquiring popular developer platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, a significant deal that marks the chip giant's latest effort to use its growing cash pile.
The acquisition brings Nvidia closer to developers who use Hugging Face to find models and tools, potentially creating a pipeline of customers that may buy its processors to run AI services. This move is part of Nvidia's strategy to broaden its customer base as clients like Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft develop their own AI chips.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that open-source models 'broaden access to AI and help ensure that AI leadership is distributed across companies, institutions, and communities.' He emphasized that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. Developers can choose their preferred models, chips, and cloud platforms.
The deal includes a payment of about $11.9 billion to Hugging Face investors, with Nvidia offering an equity-based retention program of up to $1 billion for staff who join the company. This acquisition aims to address investor fears that Nvidia may be artificially inflating valuations and contributing to a bubble in the industry.
