Nvidia Eyes $3 Billion Investment in SoftBank Subsidiary for OpenAI Data Center
Nvidia is in talks to invest up to $3 billion in SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, as part of its deal with OpenAI for a massive data center project in Ohio. The proposed investment is linked to Nvidia's credit support for the project, which could reach around $100 billion. According to sources, Nvidia plans to invest half of the $3 billion when the Ohio deal is signed and the other half through SB Energy's planned initial public offering.
SB Energy, backed by OpenAI, aims to go public as soon as next month and is expected to raise at least $5 billion in its IPO. The company develops large-scale power and data center infrastructure projects, including several data center campuses supporting rising AI workloads. This news comes after a recent report from The Wall Street Journal stated that Nvidia has revised its plans for the Ohio project, initially guaranteeing less than $120 billion instead of the previously discussed $250 billion.
Nvidia and SB Energy did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours. Reuters could not verify the report but notes that SB Energy is building several data center campuses, including one in Ohio, to meet growing demand tied to AI workloads.
