Nvidia Faces Heat from Custom AI Chip Competitors
Nvidia, the world's largest chipmaker, has reported record revenue of $96 billion in its second-quarter results. The company attributed this success to rising demand for AI chips and data centers from hyperscalers like Meta and Amazon.
However, Nvidia's dominance in the market may be challenged by a growing number of competitors. OpenAI, Google, Meta, and others are developing their own custom AI chips, which could potentially dent Nvidia's market share.
The Jalapeño chip developed by OpenAI and Broadcom is one such example. It was showcased at the Hot Chips conference on Tuesday, just before Nvidia's earnings were announced. While the Jalapeño chip may have beaten Nvidia's Blackwell in inference work, it cannot perform tasks that Nvidia's chips can handle.
Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang and CFO Colette Kress had predicted record revenue for the second quarter, and their prediction was met with $96 billion in actual sales. The company is now targeting 12-figure revenue in the third quarter, but competition from custom AI chips may put a dent in its growth.
