Nvidia has committed to spending $250 million over five years to bolster UK computing resources for AI research. The funding will support three key institutions: the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD), the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR), and Imperial College London. According to Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s founder and CEO, this investment aims to advance AI capability and safety in tandem, placing accelerated computing tools in the hands of UK researchers.
The initiative will focus on agentic safety and security research, connecting various areas of UK expertise. BOLD, led by the University of Oxford, is developing AI systems that learn and adapt alongside humans. SOFAIR, under UCL, is exploring open-source AI architectures and more accessible AI deployment methods. Imperial College London will concentrate on safety engineering and robotics.
Nvidia will fund compute access through UK-based Nvidia Cloud Partners, with infrastructure hosted domestically. This move supports the UK compute ecosystem and provides a platform for research. The program will emphasize secure agents, open-model security, and real-world threat mitigation, utilizing Nvidia’s OpenShell and Sentry reference design. Findings will inform safeguards across the broader computing ecosystem.
