Nvidia Reintroduces Old Bug in GeForce Driver 617.42
Nvidia's GeForce driver release notes have reintroduced an old bug, labeled 6007998, in their latest version 617.42. This issue, which pertains to the "Prefer Maximum Performance" Power Management Mode not being applied correctly, was absent from the previous driver release, 617.14, but has now resurfaced as the sole open issue in 617.42. Nvidia has not provided any explanation for its reappearance or indicated whether it has been fixed.
The bug was previously listed in multiple driver versions spanning from May 26 to September 9 but disappeared in the September 22 release. The latest notes also highlight that the Assassin's Creed Shadows crash has been fixed in this update. However, Nvidia has not specified any affected GPUs, laptop models, or specific symptoms related to the bug, leaving users in the dark about its impact.
The company's release notes carry a disclaimer stating that the listed issues are only a subset of all changes made. The documentation process remains inconsistent, as seen when Nvidia removed the bug entry without any fix note in the previous release. This pattern of unexplained changes in documentation can pose challenges for users relying on vendor notes before updating their drivers.
For now, GeForce users updating to driver 617.42 will see one known issue where previously there were different ones. The next driver edition will determine if this bug remains or if new issues emerge.
