NVIDIA RTX Gets Shader Delivery as Microsoft Expands Cross-Vendor Push
Microsoft is rolling out Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) to every NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU this month, extending a feature that until now only worked on AMD's RDNA graphics cards. The DirectX team confirmed the expansion in an October 1, 2026 blog post.
The core idea behind ASD is to ship precompiled, GPU-specific shaders with the game itself rather than making a player's CPU build them on the spot. This aims to fix shader compilation stutter, which has frustrated PC gamers for years, especially at first launch and after driver updates.
NVIDIA's existing automatic DX12 shader-cache rebuild, which runs after driver updates, was itself a response to the same underlying issue, just implemented locally rather than at the delivery stage. With ASD, the precompiled shaders are matched to specific hardware, delivered as part of the same game download.
