Nvidia Shares Surge to Record High Near $6 Trillion Valuation
Nvidia shares have soared to a new record high above $243, driven by optimistic semiconductor price targets and strong market confidence. The company's market capitalization is nearing the $6 trillion mark, although the high costs of financing data-center infrastructure could pose challenges for future growth. Analysts remain bullish on Nvidia's position in the data-center market, with Morgan Stanley reiterating it as a top semiconductor pick due to its market position and growth prospects.
The broader semiconductor sector is also seeing strength, particularly from AMD, which received upgrades from Wall Street analysts. Citi raised its price target for AMD to $800 from $575, while Mizuho increased its target to $705 from $580. These upgrades have contributed to a bullish sentiment across the chip sector, benefiting Nvidia as well.
Amazon is exploring a financing structure to manage the significant capital requirements for advanced computing infrastructure, highlighting the enormous costs involved. The company is considering moving about $8 billion of Nvidia chips into a special-purpose vehicle funded by outside investors, which could involve debt issuance and the sale of up to a 10% equity stake. This underscores the complex financing structures and elevated infrastructure spending expectations that could impact Nvidia's rally.
Despite the record high, Nvidia faces potential risks from higher financing costs or tighter lending standards, which could slow data-center expansion. Barclays analyst Tom O’Malley estimates Nvidia could capture at least $30 billion in additional revenue during 2026 and 2027 from the five largest cloud providers. However, the company remains dependent on cloud providers maintaining aggressive spending levels to support its growth.
