Nvidia's massive acquisition of Groq's chip technology has drawn the attention of the US Department of Justice, which is investigating whether the deal was structured to avoid antitrust scrutiny.

The $17 billion purchase, announced in December, gave Nvidia a non-exclusive license to use Groq's technology and hired several of the startup's executives, including founder Jonathan Ross.

An investigation into the structure of the deal was opened shortly after it was announced, with the DOJ sending Nvidia a formal request for information. An Nvidia spokesperson defended the deal, saying it 'is a prime example of the American system working as designed' to promote innovation and reward entrepreneurs.
