Nvidia’s long-standing GeForce bug mysteriously disappears from driver notes
Nvidia’s Windows release notes for GeForce drivers listed the same bug for seven consecutive updates, from version 610.47 on May 26 to 616.92 on September 9. The issue, described as 'Prefer Maximum Performance' Power Management Mode not applying correctly, vanished from the notes in version 617.14 released on September 22, without any indication of whether it was fixed or still present.
The bug, identified by the number 6007998, appeared with the Release 610 driver branch and persisted through the Release 615 branch, including versions 616.56, 616.64, and 616.92. Nvidia’s latest driver, 617.14, addresses three other issues but makes no mention of bug 6007998.
Nvidia has clarified that its known-issues list is only a subset of changes, meaning the absence of a bug from the list does not necessarily indicate it has been resolved. The current open-issues list for 617.14 includes only one entry: a crash to desktop in Assassin’s Creed Shadows after extended play.
The discrepancy highlights a common challenge in graphics driver documentation, where gaps between documented and actual changes can occur. AMD faced a similar issue in late September when a driver version referenced by The Witcher 3 players had not been officially released. As of October 5, Nvidia has not released a newer driver since 617.14.
