Nvidia's Revenue Forecast Fails to Ease Investor Concerns Over AI Chip Dominance
Nvidia, one of the world's most valuable companies, forecast its quarterly revenue to exceed Wall Street estimates. The company expects third-quarter revenue of $108 billion, plus or minus 2%, compared with analysts' average estimate of $104.19 billion.
This comes as Nvidia faces growing competition in the AI chip market from central processors and custom chips that are better suited for tasks such as inference. Rivals Intel and AMD are targeting this market, and several Chinese firms have already produced their own chips for these tasks.
Nvidia has taken notice of this trend and unveiled a new central processor and AI system based on technology licensed from inference-focused startup Groq in a $17 billion deal. The company's dominance as the AI market leader was reinforced when SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said that the rocket firm would exclusively use Nvidia's hardware.
Nvidia has stated that the revenue opportunity for its AI chips could exceed $1 trillion through 2027, doubling from the $500 billion opportunity through 2026. Despite this, Nvidia's shares fell 1.2% in extended trading after the company released its forecast.
