NYC Residents Must Switch to New Trash Bins or Face $200 Fines

New York City residents are facing a deadline to switch to the new NYC Bins for trash collection, or risk fines of up to $200. The city's Department of Sanitation has made it clear that as of June 1, all properties with one to nine residential units must use only official NYC Bins for trash set out.

The warning period for residents to get the new bins will be in effect until September 7, after which full enforcement of the NYC Bin requirements will begin. The NYC Bins are available for pickup at different Home Depot locations across the city, and can also be ordered online for delivery from Home Depot.

The bins come in different sizes, including 45 gallons, 35 gallons, and 25 gallons. Officials hope that the new bins will keep New York City streets cleaner, and Department of Sanitation Commissioner Gregory Anderson has stated that 'these bins are the cheapest of their quality... They're sturdy, rat resistant, and compatible with new mechanical tippers on the back of our collection trucks.'

Residents who fail to have the proper NYC bin by September 8 could face fines ranging from $50 for the first offense, to $200 for further violations. Certain property owners who receive the STAR property tax benefit are eligible for an NYC Trash Bin reimbursement from the NYC Department of Finance.
