Obamacare Crackdown May Drive Up US Health Insurance Costs
Vice President JD Vance's efforts to crack down on alleged fraud in Obamacare health insurance may lead to higher costs for Americans, potentially straining a dwindling market.
The Affordable Care Act created subsidized plans for individuals, with 19 million people currently enrolled. However, the Trump administration claims that the growth was fueled by fraud, citing the removal of 760,000 enrollees who it believes did not exist or sold non-existent coverage while pocketing premiums.
Investors and analysts warn that this crackdown could compress insurer margins for companies like UnitedHealth and Centene in the remaining months of 2027 and throughout next year. Insurers have already requested a 15% midpoint rate adjustment increase for 2027 across all 50 states and Washington DC, marking a second consecutive year of double-digit increases.
