Open Architecture Paves Way for Industry Disruption

On August 12, 1981, IBM launched the IBM Personal Computer (PC), which would go on to shape the tech industry in profound ways.

The IBM PC was built using off-the-shelf components from Intel and Microsoft, with a processor based on the 8088 chip and the PC DOS operating system licensed from Microsoft.

IBM's decision to use open architecture not only accelerated the adoption of personal computers but also created an ecosystem that allowed thousands of other companies to innovate and build compatible products.

This move enabled software developers like Lotus, WordStar, and dBase to create applications that could run on a wide range of machines, making it easier for businesses to invest in technology.

However, this decision also meant that IBM lost control of the PC ecosystem, as companies like Microsoft and Intel began to capture more value through their software and processor standards.
