OpenAI, Rivals Team Up on AI Safety Amid Growing Concerns
OpenAI is joining forces with its main competitors, Anthropic and Google's DeepMind, to address concerns over AI safety. The company believes coordination on this issue does not require an antitrust exemption. This collaboration comes after a proposal by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to slow down the development of advanced AI systems.
OpenAI's head of global policy, Chris Lehane, said at a briefing in Washington that engagements with Anthropic and DeepMind have been ongoing for several weeks. He cited the commercial aviation industry as an example where companies aid each other in improving safety without needing exemptions.
The discussions are part of a broader effort to address potential risks posed by advanced AI systems. Lehane stated that OpenAI is willing to support bipartisan legislative plans aimed at preventing catastrophic AI risks, including establishing a federal AI governance framework.
