UnitedHealth Group's Optum Health has been working to turn around its performance after disappointing results in Q1 2025. In an effort to right the ship, Optum Health CEO Krista Nelson highlighted some of the initiatives underway at the Wells Fargo Healthcare Conference on Wednesday. One key area driving improved clinical performance is new programs launched in response to the downturn.

Nelson said that 'all of our clinical metrics are really performing better than we expected,' particularly around transitions of care, care coordination, and patient support across multiple touchpoints. The company has seen improvements in skilled nursing facility admissions, inpatient readmissions, and length of stay. Additionally, Optum Health grew patient-facing hours by 12% in the first half of the year.

Nelson emphasized cost management as a 'big theme' this year and next, with operating initiatives including enhancing productivity for physicians and updates to scheduling. The company has also dug into its other payer contracts to identify misalignment, addressing those gaps. For instance, executives noted that Optum Health plans to sell its interest in certain Optum clinics to private equity firm TPG.

Nelson stated that the performance enhancements are pacing ahead of schedule, supporting investment back into Optum Health and margin expansion in 2027 and 2028. She also mentioned new strategic initiatives aimed at driving affordability, improving quality, and expanding margins by points inside '27 and beyond.
