Orca Autonomous Submarine Completes Record-Breaking 1,000 Nautical Mile Test

The U.S. Navy has successfully completed its first test of the Orca XLUUV, an autonomous underwater vehicle developed by Boeing. The Orca traveled over 1,000 nautical miles across the Pacific in July 2026, showcasing its ability to conduct prolonged missions without human intervention.

The Orca is designed to be a reusable submarine platform, with a modular compartment that can change depending on the mission requirements. This allows for different sensors and systems to be used for various objectives, making it an efficient and cost-effective option.

The system's hybrid energy strategy combines battery power with diesel marine generators, enabling it to reach a maximum range of 6,500 nautical miles, or approximately 12,038 kilometers. This is a significant achievement, as the Navy can now move between operational areas separated by thousands of kilometers without the need for sailors inside the hull.
