Procter & Gamble (P&G) is tackling inflation-weary shoppers with a bold strategy centered on premium innovation. The company’s new Pampers Amore line, launched in March, features diapers with enhanced absorbency, a cashmere-like feel, and superior skin protection. Despite a 10% price hike compared to its Pampers Swaddlers, the line is projected to hit $100 million in sales in its first year, contributing to P&G’s strongest organic sales growth in nearly three years.
P&G’s latest fiscal quarter results, reported last week, showed a 4% rise in organic sales, the best performance in 11 quarters. The success reassured Wall Street that new CEO Shailesh Jejurikar can navigate the challenging consumer goods climate. Shares surged 6% on the news, marking the biggest jump since 2020.
The company is balancing affordability with innovation. While offering lower prices and new pack sizes for budget-conscious consumers, P&G is also introducing high-end products like Amore diapers and the Pantene Abundant & Strong haircare line, which targets women experiencing hair loss. CFO Andre Schulten emphasized P&G’s focus on innovation and execution to drive growth.
Under Jejurikar’s leadership, P&G is halfway through a two-year restructuring program that includes 7,000 job cuts. His mandate is to revitalize the company’s innovation pipeline to maintain market share and pricing power. However, the long-term question remains: Will consumers continue paying premium prices for products like cashmere-soft diapers as inflation persists?
