Palantir's Road to the Dow: Barriers Ahead

Palantir Technologies' (NASDAQ: PLTR) market performance has been impressive, with gains of nearly 2,700% since its low in December 2022. This success has led some analysts to speculate about the stock's potential inclusion in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI). The DJI is a price-weighted index that includes only 30 stocks, and Palantir's market cap of around $438 billion makes it one of the largest companies trading on U.S. markets.

However, meeting the basic qualifications for inclusion in the DJI does not guarantee entry. A committee run by S&P Global decides which stocks belong to the index, and Palantir faces challenges from its relatively young age and formidable competition.

The company's market cap is smaller than former Dow 30 stocks like Intel and ExxonMobil, and it may struggle to achieve the level of maturity that Dow officials look for in a company. Microsoft had traded for 13 years at the time it joined the index in 1999, while Palantir is approaching its sixth anniversary since going public.
