Phelan Green Group has announced plans to develop an electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) facility in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, South Africa. The project, part of the wider Phelan Green Hydrogen Project, will use renewable electricity, water, and captured CO2 to produce SAF.

The first phase is expected to produce 35,000 tonnes per year (t/y) of eSAF, with full development increasing production to 140,000 t/y for export to EU and UK markets. The facility will utilize Johnson Matthey's HyCOgen technology, bp's FT CANS technology, and Honeywell UOP's Fischer Tropsch Unicracking technology to produce synthetic crude oil, which will then be upgraded to meet aviation fuel standards.

The project is expected to support thousands of local jobs across its multiple phases. Construction is set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a total capital expenditure of R47-billion for the Phelan Green Hydrogen Project.
