Philippines Aligns Bond Pricing with Global Standards Ahead of JPMorgan Index Inclusion
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the banking industry are working together to finalize regulations that will align Philippine bond pricing practices with global standards.
This move is aimed at addressing banks' concerns as the Philippines prepares to be included in JPMorgan's government bond index, a benchmark widely tracked by global investors. The country's peso-denominated government bonds are set to join the emerging-market government bond index on January 29, 2027.
The BSP has formed a technical working group with market participants to iron out the final details of the shift to international bond pricing conventions. Banks have expressed concerns that the change could reduce the value of government securities in their trading books, potentially eroding profits and leading to valuation losses for retail investors and trust clients.
To address these concerns, the BSP plans to issue a formal regulatory directive, which will help shield banks from potential lawsuits by making clear that the change was mandated by the central bank.
