Pixel Phones Turned Into Mini Computers with Android 17 Update

Android 17 is transforming Pixel phones into mini computers, making them feel bigger and more capable. This upgrade comes after Android 16 QPR3, which introduced connected display support for Pixel and Samsung phones. With Android 17, Google is pushing apps to adapt better to large screens and resizable layouts.

The feature allows users to open apps in separate windows, resize them, and use a connected monitor as a larger workspace. This change makes more sense when using apps like browsers, messages, notes, and file managers, which don't have to fight for space on the phone's screen.

However, not all apps are created equal. Some behave poorly outside their typical phone layout, wasting half the screen or scaling poorly with a mouse pointer. Android 17 aims to change this by making large-screen resizability and orientation changes more accessible to app developers.

Samsung DeX has been showing that Android phones can handle tasks like email, documentation, web browsing, messaging, and light multitasking on a bigger screen. Google's port of desktop windowing into Android is different from Samsung's approach but shares the same goal: making Android phones feel more computer-like.
