Pixel Watch 5 Simplifies Software with Unified Build Strategy
Google has released factory and OTA images for the Pixel Watch 5, implementing a unified build strategy. This means that both Wi-Fi and LTE models of the smartwatch will use a single software build, CD5A.260611.00. The move is expected to simplify Google's internal software process by consolidating builds and reducing the complexity of future updates.
The Pixel Watch 5 runs on Wear OS 7, which is based on Android 17. One notable aspect is that flashing factory images still requires a debug adapter that Google only ships by invitation. Additionally, unlocking the bootloader will make the watch less secure, while installing a factory image will wipe it clean.
With this new foundation in place, the September update should provide insight into how quickly Google can extend the experience to older Pixel Watches. The Pixel Watch 5 already boasts new software features like Gemini Intelligence and At a Glance, along with hardware upgrades such as 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.
