Plug Power Teams Up with Microsoft to Test Hydrogen Fuel Cells
Plug Power, a hydrogen fuel cell company, has partnered with Microsoft to test its proton exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cells as a backup power system. This collaboration demonstrates the technical viability of Plug's fuel cells for data centers.
The project involved building and housing a 3-megawatt (MW) backup power system prototype in two 40-foot shipping containers, capable of generating enough energy to replace a standard diesel generator. The unit responded well to simulated power grid outages, ramping up in seconds and using hydrogen as fuel.
Plug Power's CEO, Jose Luis Crespo, emphasized that this collaboration does not indicate a strategy shift for the company. Instead, Plug remains focused on its core operations while reining in costs to achieve profitability for the first time in its history.
