Portland Community Stands with Day Laborers Against ICE Threats

Portland's community rallied behind day laborers on September 27 at a Home Depot parking lot, where property management had been pushing them out. The workers were supported by over 100 community members, three elected officials, and various organizations. District 3 City Councillor Tiffany Koyama Lane stated that no worker should have to choose between putting food on the table and staying safe from harm.

The Adopt-A-Corner project, coordinated by Voz and the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC), aims to deter ICE agents. Volunteers are stationed at locations where day laborers congregate to find work, providing not only a watchful eye but also food and resource delivery to families affected by ICE attacks.

The worker-led rally presented three demands: direct meetings with Mall 205 property management, collaboration on establishing a safe hiring area, and allowing workers to return without retaliation. A digital petition has been launched to support these demands, which can be found online.
