Qatar Airways Pioneers Starlink on Boeing 787-9
Qatar Airways has made history by becoming the first airline to introduce Starlink internet connectivity on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This move brings the total number of Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft in its fleet to 150, with the installation programme for the entire Boeing 787 fleet expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The carrier has been rapidly expanding its satellite internet capabilities, with over 23 million passengers already having connected to the system on more than 86,000 Qatar Airways flights. Starlink provides high-speed internet access, allowing passengers to use services such as video calls, content streaming, and working with larger amounts of data.
The airline's widebody fleet now includes Boeing 787-8s, which have been equipped with Starlink since January this year, and the new Boeing 787-9s. The introduction of Starlink on these aircraft has significantly enhanced passenger experience, offering 'gate-to-gate' connectivity that is available at no additional charge.
The pace of Qatar Airways' satellite internet installation programme has been impressive, with over 83% of planned installations already completed. When compared to the beginning of the year, the number of Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft has increased from just under 120 to 150 in just seven months.
