Qcells and Microsoft Team Up for AI-Friendly Energy Infrastructure
Qcells, a clean energy company owned by the South Korean Hanwha Group, is expanding its partnership with Microsoft to develop new generation and flexible energy resources. The two companies are exploring ways to pair AI infrastructure with new energy capacity under a proposed 'bring-your-own-capacity' (BYOC) model.
The BYOC model would allow Qcells to develop and build new energy capacity that can be delivered directly to Microsoft or to the local utility serving the surrounding community. Microsoft would fund the power required for its operations, ensuring that new data center demand is matched with new energy resources.
The companies are also investigating Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) that combine residential and commercial batteries into a single flexible energy resource.
