Restricting Background Activity Saves Android Battery Life

For weeks, Sagar's Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra would die by 4 PM even on days he barely touched it. He suspected a faulty battery or misbehaving apps but soon realized that Google Play Services was silently syncing, polling, and pinging in the background all day long.

The culprit behind his phone's poor battery life wasn't an app itself but its background activity. Disabling Google Play Services entirely would break sign-in, push notifications, and cause apps to crash. However, restricting its background activity had a different effect.

By limiting the background activities of Google Play Services, Sagar was able to extend his phone's battery life. He discovered that three main factors were draining his battery: unapproved location pings, notification polling in a loop, and account syncing continue. By disabling these features, he was able to save his battery from unnecessary wear and tear.

To restrict Google Play Services' background activity, Sagar followed these steps:

1. Open Settings

2. Scroll down and tap on Apps

3. Select any Google app like Google Play Store, Google main app, or Google Play Services itself

4. Tap on Mobile data

5. Toggle off Allow background data usage

This restriction didn't affect Sagar's ability to manually refresh or open the app whenever he wanted. Sync still worked as long as he could sign in to his Google account, but it stopped running silently in the background.
