RTX 3000 Series Owners Get Smooth Motion Feature via Unofficial Mod
Nvidia's Smooth Motion feature has been unofficially made to work on RTX 3000 series GPUs, thanks to a new mod available on GitHub. This mod, called NVSmooth30, allows users to enable driver-level frame generation in games that don't have official support for it.
The process is relatively simple: users need to place the DLL file into the relevant game's folder and use the Nvidia Profile Inspector app to enable Smooth Motion. However, the creator warns that this is an experimental project and may run the risk of game bugs and crashes, or potentially other issues.
Smooth Motion is essentially identical to AMD's Fluid Motion Frames, enabling frame generation in games that don't have official support for it. This feature is most useful for older games or games running in emulators.
The mod works by modifying Nvidia's driver-level frame generation DLL file, labeled NvPresent64, bypassing the usual compatibility checks that would stop it from working on Ampere GPU hardware. It also 'conservative metadata retargeting' from Ada Lovelace (RTX 4000 series) and targets Ampere instead.
Nvidia has been impressive with its latest technologies, but the component price crisis means that new GPUs are unaffordable for most people. Gamers want new features like Multi-Frame Generation, Dynamic Frame Generation, and Smooth Motion, but can't use them on older hardware.
