S&P 500 Hits New High Amid Economic Challenges
The US stock market reached new heights despite ongoing economic challenges. The S&P 500 climbed 44.98 points, or 0.6%, to 7,818.93 on Tuesday, surpassing its previous all-time high from August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq composite also saw gains, rising 253.38 points and 122.48 points respectively.
Since hitting a low in late March, the S&P 500 has surged 23%, despite concerns over war, inflation, and bond market pressure. Investors are benefiting from these record-high stock prices, even as many Americans feel pessimistic about the rising cost of living.
Companies continue to report strong profits, supporting the market's resilience. Lamb Weston, for instance, exceeded revenue and profit projections for its latest quarter, leading to a 7.5% rally in its stock. CEO Mike Smith acknowledged rising expenses but raised the company's profit forecast for the fiscal year.
AI stocks, particularly Nvidia, have significantly contributed to the market's gains, with Nvidia's stock up 28.3% so far this year. Constellation Energy also saw a 12.2% jump after securing a deal to supply Google with electricity. Additionally, Option Care Health soared 32.6% following its acquisition by CD&R and McKesson for $5.8 billion.
