S&P 500 Slips From Record High Amid Inflation Concerns
The US stock market experienced a slight downturn on Friday as the S&P 500 (^GSPC) slipped from its record high. Despite this, it marked its third consecutive weekly gain with a decline of about 0.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) also dropped 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell by approximately 0.3%.
The drop in stocks was partly due to deteriorating consumer sentiment, as revealed by a preliminary reading of August's consumer sentiment from the University of Michigan. Americans' concerns about inflation remain top of mind, contributing to the cautious investor mindset.
The absence of major earnings reports on Friday meant that investors shifted their focus towards upcoming retail earnings, including those from Target (TGT) and Walmart (WMT), as well as Nvidia's (NVDA) highly anticipated report scheduled for August 26. Additionally, new data showed US retail sales declining the most in over a year last month.
