Salesforce's Deal with Claude Proves the 'SaaS Apocalypse' Narrative Was Always Flawed
David Sacks, co-founder of Yammer and host of the All-In Podcast, recently pushed back on the 'SaaS apocalypse' narrative, which suggests that AI will render traditional enterprise software obsolete. He argued that core systems of record, such as CRM (customer relationship management) software, are not going to be replaced by AI-generated alternatives.
Sacks' argument is based on the idea that the value of these systems lies in their accumulated truth and institutional memory, rather than just their code or features. He pointed out that an AI can regenerate the interface of a CRM system in an afternoon, but it cannot replicate the years of experience and trust built into the system.
The same week as Sacks made this argument, Salesforce, a leading provider of CRM software, announced a deal with Claude, an AI startup. However, instead of replacing Salesforce's core systems, Claude's technology was integrated on top of them to provide additional reasoning capabilities.
