In an interview with Crunchyroll, Sonic Team director Takashi Iizuka revealed that Sega aimed to beat Disney with their mascot Sonic the Hedgehog in the early '90s. According to Iizuka, the team's passion and goal was to create content that would surpass Disney's.

The Sonic film series has enjoyed notable success at the global box office, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide between 2020 and 2024. During this period, each installment outperformed Walt Disney Animation Studios' releases before the success of Moana 2 in 2024.
