Small Business Owners Face Retirement Without Plans, Threatening American Dream

JPMorganChase has highlighted a pressing issue in its report 'Powering 10 Million Small Businesses', which reveals that millions of aging small-business owners are nearing retirement without a clear plan for their businesses. A survey of 1,000 business owners found that while 70% are in the early stages of succession planning, only 8% have reached an advanced stage.

This gap is significant, considering approximately 12 million businesses, valued at nearly $10 trillion in assets, are projected to change hands over the next decade. The trend is notably acute in sectors deemed critical to national security, where over half of business owners are aged 55 or older.

The 'Great Wealth Transfer' or 'Silver Tsunami' narrative describes the slow exit of baby boomers who control a substantial portion of America's wealth. However, the challenge lies not just in demographics but the paralysis faced by these business owners as they contemplate retirement.
