Smartwatch Support Ends: Apple, Google, and Samsung Cut Lifelines for Older Models

Major technology companies Apple, Google, and Samsung are ending software support for some of their popular smartwatches. This means that older models will no longer receive major updates or security patches.

The affected watches include several Apple Watch Series models, the Pixel Watch 2 from Google, and the Galaxy Watch 5 and Pro from Samsung. These devices will reach the end of their guaranteed software-update periods in 2026, with some losing compatibility with newer operating systems while others will continue to receive security fixes.

According to a report, Apple's watchOS 27 is ending support for the Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, second-generation SE, and first-generation Ultra watches. Google's Pixel Watch 2 reaches its guaranteed software-support deadline in October, while Samsung's Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro are nearing the end of their guaranteed major Wear OS upgrades.

While owners can still use these devices for core functions, they may face issues with newer apps and services. Security is also a concern as known vulnerabilities remain unpatched without updates. Owners should check the exact type of support their watch is losing before replacing it, as the end of major feature updates is different from the end of security patches.
