South Korea Challenges Nvidia's Dominance in Sovereign AI Landscape
South Korea is actively diversifying its AI semiconductor ecosystem through alternative chip platforms and domestic partnerships. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, Nvidia still powers over 90% of more than 170 sovereign AI models across 55 countries, excluding the United States and China.
The report found that 92.4 percent of these models rely on Nvidia's AI accelerators, while AMD ranked second with a 4.1 percent share. Cerebras accounted for 1.7 percent. Counterpoint noted that Nvidia's dominance is reinforced by the widespread adoption of its CUDA software platform.
South Korea has begun expanding the use of alternative AI semiconductor technologies. Moreh, an AI startup, developed large language models using AMD-based infrastructure. Motif, a subsidiary of Moreh, is also building AI models on AMD platforms.
