SpiceJet Grounds Remaining Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft Amid Financial Crisis

SpiceJet has grounded its remaining three Boeing 737 MAX aircraft due to financial constraints and leasing issues. The airline, which is struggling with a long-running financial crisis, had attempted to recover in 2024 with a ₹30 billion capital raising but has fallen short of restoring its former scale.

The suspension of the 737 MAX flights comes as SpiceJet's domestic market position continues to decline, from about 15% in 2019 to 1.6% in July this year. The airline carried about 187,000 domestic passengers in July, a significant decrease from previous years.

SpiceJet had planned to transition to a much larger MAX fleet but the deliveries were interrupted when the type was grounded worldwide in 2019 following the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash. The manufacturer's Orders & Deliveries database records 142 gross MAX orders from SpiceJet, with only 13 delivered before the grounding.

The 129 aircraft remaining unfilled dwarf SpiceJet's present operation, which consists of just 11 active aircraft across its entire fleet. Several of the original 13 aircraft have since left SpiceJet and returned to their lessors, while others have been temporarily supplied by other airlines such as Corendon Airlines and Ascend Airways.
