Residents of Springs in East Hampton are divided over a proposed parking lot at the local library. The plan, which has been discussed by the Springs Citizens Advisory Committee, aims to alleviate parking shortages during events and nearby. Proponents argue that a gravel parking lot with natural landscaping would integrate well into the surrounding area and provide adequate space for attendees.

Councilman Ian Calder-Piedmonte said the current proposal is for a 17,000 square foot clearing to accommodate 33 parking spaces, including two handicap spots. He emphasized that the plan does not aim to create an 'ugly Home Depot parking lot' but rather one that blends with its surroundings.

Opponents worry about the impact on water quality in Pussy's Pond and Accabonac Harbor. Patrice Dalton, a town trustee, expressed concern over the removal of topsoil and application of aggregate mix for gravel, which could lead to compacted soil and increased risk of water runoff.

Krae Van Sickle argued that a parking lot would only temporarily alleviate traffic congestion, ultimately leading to more frequent overflow and decreased parking capacity. He suggested exploring alternative solutions such as bicycle paths or re-parking on School Street, a short walk from event spaces.
